Threat Still Looms for New Madrid Seismic Zone

Threat Still Looms for New Madrid Seismic Zone,
USGS Says

In a study published in late January of 2014 in both Science Mag and through the USGS Newsroom, two USGS Seismologists Morgan Page and Susan Hough argue that the recent activity in the New Madrid Seismic Zone is not aftershocks but in fact new earthquakes building new pressure. This isn't a new threat though, the USGS publicly released an article on the New Madrid Seismic Zone still being a concern way back in 2009- 5 years ago. That threat has not gone away.

Rolling Under New Madrid

"During 1811–1812, the New Madrid Seismic Zone experienced a sequence of three large intraplate earthquakes and at least one comparably sized aftershock. There have been no earthquakes of similar magnitudes since then. Using a combination of historical data dating back to the original large events and an epidemic-type aftershock sequence model, Page and Hough (p. 762, published online 23 January) found that the current low seismicity is not part of an aftershock sequence. Instead, despite low observable deformation rates, there is ongoing accumulation of strain, leaving the potential for large earthquakes in the region." -Editor's Summary of The New Madrid Seismic Zone: Not Dead Yet

USGS

USGS
"Roadways in the Mississippi Valley of Arkansas and Missouri (such as Interstate 55) could become impassable because of bridge failures and fissuring of road surfaces. Venting of large quantities of water, sand, and mud as a result of liquefaction could flood fields and roads and disrupt agriculture for weeks to months. Flooding of farmland, where agricultural chemicals are stored onsite, could contaminate rivers and streams. Failure of levees, especially during high water, would contribute to flooding, and failures of riverbanks could make the Mississippi River and its tributaries difficult to navigate for many weeks. The City of Memphis and the surrounding metropolitan area of more than one million people would be severely impacted. Memphis has an aging infrastructure, and many of its large buildings, including unreinforced schools and fire and police stations, would be particularly vulnerable when subjected to severe ground shaking. Relatively few buildings were built using building codes that have provisions for seismic-resistant design. Soil liquefaction and related ground failures are likely to occur in downtown Memphis along the Mississippi River and along the Wolf River that passes through Memphis. The older highways and railroad bridges that cross the Mississippi River, as well as older overpasses, would likely be damaged or collapse in the event of a major New Madrid earthquake. Some of the bridges and pipelines crossing the Wolf River might be damaged or destroyed. Although Memphis is likely to be the focus of major damage in the region, St. Louis, Mo., Little Rock, Ark., and many small and medium-sized cities would also sustain damage." -USGS

"I don't agree that this area is dying out," said Morgan Page, lead study author and a geophysicist with the USGS in Pasadena, Calif. "It's not going to go off anytime soon, but we do have evidence that more stress is being built up now. Eventually, that energy will have to be released in a large earthquake." -Thanks to Active New Madrid Fault Zone, Midwest Earthquake Risk Still Looms - "Even though we can't predict earthquakes, we can predict the rates of aftershocks over time," Page explained. "The frequency of aftershocks — smaller quakes that follow the big earthquake — decreases with time, known in seismology as Omori's Law. And in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, the aftershocks aren't following Omori's Law."

Alaska hit by 7.0 Earthquake, Volcanic Eruption in 24 Hours

ALASKA HIT BY 7.0 EARTHQUAKE,
VOLCANIC ERUPTION IN 24 HOURS

On Friday August 30th, 2013 Alaska was hit by both a large earthquake, and a large volcanic eruption. The eruption of the Veniaminof volcano on the Alaskan Peninsula sent ash more than three miles into the sky, while the 7.0 quake struck off shore Alaska, specifically near Adak Island. Although both the volcanic eruption and earthquake were tied to the same tectonic plate, at this time there is no direct link between the two. No FAA advisories or tsunami warnings were issued in either event, also no injuries or reports of damage have been reported thus far. Veniaminof volcano remains on ORANGE alert at the AVO (Alaska Volcano Observatory).

Wisconsin Booms Continued - 4/14/2012

In my attempt to continue covering the Wisconsin booming noises I have stumbled across a couple more interviews and articles I felt were important in looking at the whole picture. Below is a detailed interview with the City Administrator of Clintonville Wisconsin, Lisa Kuss- followed by a couple more updates on the booms!

Clintonville Booms Have Quieted Down

Updated: Thursday, 12 Apr 2012, 5:56 PM CDT
Published : Thursday, 12 Apr 2012, 8:18 AM CDT

CLINTONVILLE (AP) - The reports of booming in Clintonville have quieted down.

Residents started reporting the sounds and shaking March 18 and experts detected a 1.5-magnitude earthquake about two days later. The reports started to die down until another big boom over a week later. There have been a few reports since then.

Four seismometers have been installed and so far confirmed a .1 magnitude earthquake March 30.

City administrator Lisa Kuss said Wednesday police have only received a handful of calls recently.

U.S. Geological Survey Geophysicist John Bellini says he's still comparing their data with resident reports but haven't found anything substantial.

He suspects the events are a swarm of small earthquakes - which are not unusual across the nation, can last up to a few months and can be sporadic.

All quiet...for now..

The Wisconsin Booms - 4/4/2012 UPDATED

I have been continuing to follow the Clintonville booms, and although not much has surfaced in the last couple of days I have found a couple things I felt were worth sharing. Information released on 4/2/2012 states that Clintonville seismometers registered a tiny quake of 0.1 magnitude on 3/29/2012, you can view that information here.

A couple days ago I found an article that stated that in Watertown, WI something had moved underneath the ground in a school cracking tiles and closing the school for two days. A video covering that is below, and the article and additional video can be viewed here.

4/3/2012 UPDATE: I called the Clintonville police department this morning and spoke with one of their officers. I asked if the booming noises and earthquakes were continuing and the officer said they are still occurring sporadically and they were still getting reports in nightly.

4/4/2012 UPDATE: Apparently there is a new town to add to the Wisconsin booming incidents, Baraboo, WI- or more accurately nicknamed "Baraboom". The incident is slightly different than the Clintonville and Montello booms, as these incidences seem to be preceded by bright flashes of light. A National Weather Service meteorologist confirmed today that the cause of the light was not storm related, and there were no storms in the area that could have produced lightning. The cause as of yet remains another mystery to add to the list. I have included it to the strange occurrences in Wisconsin map I have below, ironically enough I have not (as of yet) had to make a new map as they're all in this neat little square on a map. The original Baraboo news story can be viewed here.

Another interesting point, brought to you by Alex Jones of Infowars, is that during the April 7th, 2011 magnitude 7.4 quake that hit Japan there was a bright light that appeared in the sky. I have yet to find a formal explanation of that light either. The source for that information can be viewed here. I have also added a video captured of the Japanese earthquake light below the first video. The mystery continues to deepen....

Additional thing to note is that the US Government canceled the early warning satellite system for earthquakes and volcanoes in late March of last year. A couple weeks after the devastating 8.9 earthquake that struck Japan. Why would they do this? The only thing I can think of is that they were monitoring earthquakes/volcanoes worldwide and they picked up nothing before the Japanese quake. If that's true I can understand why they would cancel the program, other than that I can not honestly see why they would do such a thing. Information about this programs cancellation can be viewed here.

Although this story is "unrelated" these towns (Clintonville, Montello, Watertown, Baraboo) are all in proximity of each other. I created a map of WI that highlights the 4 towns (red dots), and one peculiar thing about Clintonville and Watertown. They practically sit on the same latitude.

Strange Occurrences in Wisconsin

Here is a map from USGS on the New Madrid seismic zone, of which the area in Wisconsin sits on.
This doesn't necessarily mean that the earthquakes, booming, or tile raising events have anything to do with one another or are related to the New Madrid seismic zone but I feel it is necessary to point out the fact that this is the case in point.

I will continue to update the information on these occurrences until they have either ceased or a "formal" and "adequate" explanation is found.

Continuing Coverage - Strange Sounds - Clintonville Booms Mystery Deepens

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

A new sound to add to the Strange Sound Phenomenon has been plaguing two Wisconsin towns, a mysterious booming noise captured in the above video by audio engineer Brian Sullivan, original story can be viewed here. The reports I have been reading about the booms have been saying that the USGS had confirmed a 1.5 earthquake and likened the cause to be a minor earthquake swarm. The USGS earthquake report can be viewed here Clintonville 1.5 3/20/2012.

Another interesting fact is that earthquakes are virtually unheard of in Wisconsin, in fact I can only find one earthquake listed as having an epicenter in the state- and it outright says it was not recorded. Here is the USGS list of earthquakes in Wisconsin and here is the USGS Wisconsin earthquake history. The 1947 Wisconsin earthquake was not recorded by seismographs because it was so 'sharp' it actually broke the equipment. RARE FIND: The original 05/07/1947 Newspaper Article.

The town of Clintonville rented seismic equipment in the hopes that they will be able to locate the origin of the loud booms, and possibly find an micro quake epicenter. So far no further information on the seismic recordings has been released. They had already 'found' their answer, courtesy of the USGS.

But the noises returned, and no further 'earthquakes' were been reported. It has many people wondering what exactly is the cause of these loud booms, and whether or not the 'answers' they were given were correct at all.

The reports continue to stream in with one of the most recent being from last night 3/29/2012, that report can be viewed here. One of the most interesting reports comes straight from the USGS which states that the Clintonville booming this week, was being monitored by seismic equipment, but it picked up nothing. USGS No Seismic Activity on Tuesday Report So what can it be? Prison planet provided us with some other possibilities (see below), regardless I will continue to cover this story until an 'answer' is found.

"If the booms are being artificially created by man-made activity, the culprits are unlikely to own up to it. There are numerous potential scenarios besides seismic activity that could be responsible for the booms, including CO2 sequestration storage, which has been documented to cause “small to moderate earthquakes,” according to Stanford geophysicist Mark Zoback.

Other speculation has centered around secret underground military tunneling work, improper disposal of wastewater from a natural gas fracking operation (also documented to cause earthquakes), or more exotic explanations such as the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), which is often blamed for unexplained weather and seismic events due to its highly secretive nature." - Alex Jones - Prision Planet

The 2010 Haiti Earthquake - One Year Later

"The humanitarian response undertaken in Haiti after the earthquake that struck on 12 January 2010 has been one of the most complex ever. However, as the first anniversary of the quake approaches, the Haitian state, together with the international community, is making little progress in reconstruction." -Oxfam International

RICHTER SCALE CHART

Richter Scale photo from this Blog

On January 12th 2010, the Island Nation of Haiti was struck by a devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake. The country, which was already poverty stricken- was severely damaged by the earthquake. In the weeks following Haiti was hit by 54 aftershocks that destroyed any buildings that remained standing after the original quake.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located just outside of Léogâne- which is only sixteen miles away from Haiti's capital, Port-Au-Prince. In the months after the devastating earthquake many Countries donated relief and recovery funds, and lent crews to help in the rescue efforts. One year later and the country lays in a standstill, with only 2-4% of the rubble being removed. Most Haitians, to this day still reside in makeshift tents and camps created in the weeks following the earthquake.

According to the Red Cross, three million Haitians were affected by the massive earthquake. The Haitian government also estimated that approximately 230,00 people had died, another 300,000 injured and at least 1,000,000 made homeless. The Prime Minister of Haiti, Jean-Max Bellerive, also stated that 250,000 homes were destroyed- as well as 30,000 businesses lost.

Oxfam International, a company who's job is to find solutions to poverty and injustice, released it's Relief to Recovery report(cite) this week citing the many problems facing Haiti now. Oxfam summarized this report also listing recommendations to help Haiti speed up the pace of their recovery.

OXFAM INTERNATIONAL SUMMARY
Oxfam International Summary

PORT-AU-PRINCE – In a report released today, international agency Oxfam called on the Haitian authorities, with support from the international community, to move forward on plans to start rebuilding the shattered country and enable close to one million people still living in tents and under tarpaulins to resettle or return home.

The report, “From Relief to Recovery“, blames a lack of progress on a crippling combination of Haitian government indecision, rich donor countries’ too frequent pursuit of their own aid priorities, and a lacklustre Interim Haiti Recovery Commission, which was established to coordinate reconstruction efforts and build state capacity.

Roland Van Hauwermeiren, country director for Oxfam in Haiti said:
“This has been a year of indecision and it has put Haiti’s recovery on hold. Nearly one million people are still living in tents or under tarpaulins and hundreds of thousands of others who are living in the city’s ruins still do not know when they will be able to return home.

“Rebuilding this shattered country will not happen overnight, but there are key decisions on jobs, clearing rubble, house repairs and allocating land for people who will not be able to return to their homes that can and must be made urgently. We now need the incoming government of Haiti to take its leadership role. The international community, including NGOs, must unite to support the government so that Haitian authorities will have a chance of succeeding.”

Despite the success of emergency lifesaving aid after last year’s earthquake, long-term recovery from the disaster has barely begun. Public donations as well as funding from donor governments and multilateral institutions for the emergency aid effort were exceptionally generous. However, of the $2.1 billion pledged by governments for reconstruction in 2010, only 42 percent had been given by the end of the year according to the UN Office of the Special Envoy for Haiti.

“Too many donors from rich countries have pursued their own aid priorities and have not effectively coordinated amongst themselves or worked with the Haitian government. This seriously weakens the government’s ability to plan and deliver on its sovereign responsibility – to lead reconstruction,” Van Hauwermeiren said.

Most donors provided funds for transitional housing but very little money for clearing rubble or repairing houses. One year on, only five percent of the rubble has been cleared and only 15 percent of the required basic and temporary houses have been built. House building on a large scale cannot be started before the enormous amount of rubble is cleared. The government and donors must prioritize this most basic step toward helping people return home.

The Interim Haiti Recovery Commission, led by former US President Bill Clinton and Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, was set up in April 2010 to facilitate the flow of funds toward reconstruction projects and to help Haitian ministries with implementation. So far, the Commission has failed to live up to its mandate. Many Haitian officials still do not have the technical ability to lead projects, and almost no major reconstruction projects have started. The Commission is a key element for reconstruction and it must cut through the quagmire of indecision and delay.

Despite the current political crisis Haiti’s political and economic elites still have a once in a lifetime chance to address many of the issues that have held back the country’s development. But the process must start now.

“If Haitians are to support themselves then the reconstruction effort must also give priority to helping people earn a living. Above all else, Haitians want to get back to work and provide for their families. They aren’t asking for charity, but for a chance to be part of the process to rebuild their own country. After going through so much last year, Haitians deserve that chance,” Van Hauwermeiren said.

One year on, Oxfam is providing aid to over one million people as part of two emergency responses: one for earthquake relief and one to respond to the cholera epidemic that has swept the country since October, killing over 2,600 people.

OXFAM INTERNATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Oxfam International Recommendations

The new Haitian government should:

Show real political leadership and urgency in reconstructing the country, including by developing a public works program that creates jobs and builds skills; supporting homeless families to return or resettle in appropriate locations; implementing social protection programs such as cash transfer and micro-credit programs; and investing in agriculture and Haitian businesses; Put measures in place to reduce corruption and improve accountability, and speed up the decentralization of power to local authorities.

International donor governments, the UN, and international NGOs should:

Work far more closely and effectively with the Haitian authorities, reinforcing their capacity and working to improve the performance of ministries;

Donors should release funds promised at the New York conference in March 2010 and improve transparency related to pledges and disbursements. They should co-operate much more closely with each other and should harmonize policies and priorities;

Major stakeholders, including Bill Clinton, should urgently review the workings of the IHRC and speed up delivery of its mandate.

The Haitian authorities, donor governments, the UN, and international NGOs should:

Consult, communicate and effectively involve Haitian citizens in the reconstruction of their country and ensure recovery programs reflect their priority needs.

Well, honestly I expected a lot more then what I found when researching/writing this post. I knew that Haiti couldn't be rebuilt in one week like they do on Extreme Makeover Home Edition, but I expected more then this. It's saddening thinking about what Haitians have to deal with on a daily basis, and than factoring in a catastrophic earthquake- there aren't really words for that feeling.

On a lighter note, surpassing every statistic in the book, a young girl- by the name of Darlene Etienne, survived the earthquake in an astonishing way. Darlene was buried for fifteen days, surrounded by concrete and steel, in a city of ruins. Most search teams had given up hope by the 27th of January- but than against all odds- someone heard a whisper calling for help. A French rescue team dug her out in front of hundreds of stunned onlookers.

A year later, Darlene Etienne is a 17 year old smiling girl living in Artibonite Valley with extended family.

Alternative Modes of Transportation: Part Two & Three
Surviving a Volcanic Eruption/Massive Earthquakes

VOLCANOES, EARTHQUAKES & PLANES
OH MY

The Yellowstone Caldera is the world's largest Supervolcano and one can only speculate how devastating its eruption would be. Obviously the closer you live to Yellowstone, the lower your survival rates will be. I, on the other hand, live literally on the edge of the East Coast, so my survival rates are high- for the most part. Volcanoes are tricky, because they come with Pyroclastic flows AKA Ash Clouds. Avoiding a volcanic eruption is seemingly easy as long as you aren't anywhere near it.

Earthquakes are pretty easy to get around too, unless you live in California. If you do live in California- close this page & move the fuck out, this is my best and only suggestion. Hopefully you understand that you won't be John Cusack in "2012", you will most likely perish only to be remembered by your extremely tiny dog and the bank account you left behind. Anyways, methods to surviving earthquakes are fairly easy. Get off the Ground! Completely!

Volcanoes and Earthquakes are extremely different, but ironically your best way to avoid and escape these disasters are identical. You will have to act quick, and one can only guess what is quick enough. You will also need to prepare ahead of time, as this isn't something you can truly master without extensive practice.

If Yellowstone blows, or we start experiencing Earth Crust Displacement (A Theory by Charles Hapgood, Supported by Albert Einstein), the only place you want to be is off the ground. Your best measure? Learn to fly. In Apocalyptic times, Martial law will be enacted, and small airports that aren't around anything will most likely be forgotten. Finders keepers I say, because chances are- the owner of that plane won't be coming around anytime soon. He's probably on some Military vehicle, thanking god that he's gonna make it out alive... Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

If the apocalypse comes around and martial law is enacted, HIDE. Do not run to authorities. Martial law means ALL your liberties that you took for granted on a daily basis are null and void. You have no liberties. I don't know about you, but if I had no liberties or rights, the last place I'd want to be is on a Military base, begging for my one phone call.

So learn to fly, and learn everything you can about everything. This is the information age people, and you literally have the world at your fingertips. Use the internet to research what's going on in the world. Use it to map seismic faults. Use it to learn which Volcanoes are active, and which are overdue for an eruption. Use it to enlighten yourself, instead of further dumbing yourself down. Stop watching MTV shows, and do something constructive with your time. "Teen Mom - Amber" and "Snookie" from the "Jersey Shore" won't be your tour guides in the apocalypse, you will be. You won't trust yourself if all you're worrying about is if your poof is high enough.

P.F.S. I don't really trust American media, so when push comes to shove, check the U.K. news outlets like B.B.C., they have no reason to lie to you after all. I'm paraphrasing this only because I can't find the actual quote, Henry Burke (Ciaran Hinds) in Race to Witch Mountain says something to the effect of this: Why would the American Government take out the Conspiracists when they're correct? Doing so would only make the American people believe what they were saying.

P.P.F.S. No vehicle works when ash is falling, so make sure you get the hell out of there before it shows its ugly face.
